Guidelines for Selecting Cutting Gases and Pressures in Fiber Laser Cutting

When cutting with a fiber laser cutting machine, different cutting gases are selected based on the material of the sheet being cut. The choice of gas and pressure significantly impacts the quality of fiber laser cutting.


Influence of Cutting Gas and Pressure on Cut Quality

1) The cutting gas aids in heat dissipation and combustion, blowing away molten residue to achieve a higher-quality cut surface.

2) Insufficient cutting gas pressure can cause the following issues: molten residue during cutting and reduced cutting speed, both of which negatively impact production efficiency.

3) Excessively high cutting gas pressure affects quality in the following ways: a rougher cut surface and wider kerf width; it also causes partial melting of the cut edge, preventing the formation of a clean, well-defined cut surface.


The Effect of Cutting Gas Pressure on Piercing

1) When gas pressure is too low, the laser struggles to penetrate the cutting plate, increasing piercing time and resulting in low productivity.

2) When gas pressure is too high, it causes melting at the penetration point, forming a larger molten pool that compromises cutting quality.

3) During laser perforation, higher gas pressures are typically used for thin plates, while specific perforation methods are employed for thick plates to mitigate the adverse effects of low pressure on lens protection.

4) When laser cutting ordinary carbon steel, the cutting gas pressure decreases relatively as material thickness increases. Conversely, when cutting stainless steel, the cutting gas pressure increases relatively with material thickness. In summary, selecting the cutting gas and pressure for laser cutting requires on-the-fly adjustments based on actual conditions during operation. Specific cutting parameters must be chosen according to the particular application scenario.
