15 Tips for Laser Welding
This article offers some laser welding tips to make your laser welding machine easier to use. Keep reading for some interesting tips and tricks!
Laser Welding 15 Tips:
1. Keep your laser welding machine clean.
2. Regularly check crosshair alignment.
3. Never program laser settings in multi-pulse mode.
4. Always wipe away “smoke residue” from welded items.
5. When practicing new techniques or experimenting with laser welding, always use your own scrap material or items before testing on customer products.
6. Position objects away from the welded “background” whenever possible. Remember: A laser pulse is a “light bullet” that can ricochet.
7. A good rule of thumb for adjusting laser settings to improve performance is: first increase/decrease milliseconds (beam duration), then adjust beam size, followed by voltage.
8. Think of laser welding settings like water from a garden hose. Opening the water (fully or partially) represents voltage. The nozzle controls beam diameter. Holding water in one spot corresponds to the millisecond setting.
9. Silver can be easily welded using pure silver solder instead of silver-plated wire.
10. You can laser pulse the weld zone at different angles to achieve varied results.
11. You don't need to touch the entire weld area. Sometimes striking it with a single beam produces excellent results.
12. You can use 30-gauge filler material for most welds. If larger weld material is needed, shoot the end of the 30-gauge wire into a larger diameter weld ball before welding.
13. Use a ‘dental floss tube’ for wire storage and easy access.
14. When using palladium alloys containing platinum, platinum appears to weld better with lower microporosity.
15. Always groove thicker weld areas. Then “slide” the sidewalls of the base metal down to the bottom of the groove you created. Fill to the top with similar filler metal.
Remember: Laser welding is both an art and a science. Develop your own style, experiment, adapt, and learn from both successes and failures. Experience is a treasure—but it's something you gain only after you need it!
